Frank Gilbert of Sioux City, Iowa, sent this picture of the damage to the Sioux City Stockyards after a flood in 1953.
Dale Christensen of Hurley, S.D., sent us this photo of his dad, Carl F. Christensen, and his dog, Rover. Dale says Rover was his dog and when he joined the Army in 1942, Rover became his dad's best friend.
Workers at Farm Island Civilian Conservation Corps camp were loading dirt for building the dam dike. Gary Rogde of Eagle, Idaho, supplied the photo. The public grand opening of the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota was May 16 near Hill City, S.D. More information can be obtained from Peggy Sanders at (605) 424-2795.
Lewis Sagmoe, Dell Rapids, S.D., on the left, and Oscar Manson of Humboldt, S.D., were catskinners at Camp Pine Creek. Their main project was building what is now known as Horsethief Lake near Mt. Rushmore, near where the camp was located.
Civilian Conservation Corps to be honored
The Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota will hold its grand opening May 16 at Hill City, S.D. A short program and the dedication of an outdoor, life-size CCC commemorative worker statue will take place at 1 p.m. at the museum location 23935 Hwy. 385, on the northeast outskirts of Hill City. The public is invited to attend the festivities and reception and tour the museum.
